Walk to school week – just a short celebration or a lifestyle choice?

May 16 2016

If walking was an official sport, I would probably be an Olympic champion. I fought for a school which was at walking distance and my son and I have have been enjoying the walk to school routine every day for the past six years. This week British families celebrate Walk to School Week (16 – 20 May) encouraged by their local schools with various activities but I wonder why all the fuss when it is obvious that walking is highly beneficial to both the physical and mental health.

It’s a packed week in cinemas, and just as packed on this week’s Talking Pictures.

Film Review: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

May 14 2016

You don’t need to be fluent in phonetic alphabet to know what the title of Tina Fey’s latest offering (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot) means.  It’s in cinemas now, certificate 15, and the combination of title and star makes you expect a comedy.  London Mums’ resident film critic, Freda Cooper, finds that appearances are deceptive.

May 14 2016

Do you miss the challenge, fulfillment and rewards of your old professional life? Perhaps you took a part-time role that doesn’t make the most of your talents? Are you ready to return to the career of your dreams, but worry about the barriers you may face?

Many professionals reach a point in their career where they decide to take a step back, or make a complete break.

If you made that choice a while ago, you may be thinking it’s time for another change. Unfortunately for many, time out of the workforce is often unaccompanied by a loss of confidence and it is all is too easy to believe that no-one will value your skills in the time you have available.

When life gives you lemons – share

May 12 2016

Did you know that 1.3 billion tons of food produced is lost or wasted every year worldwide?  That amounts to a whopping third of all food for human consumption. The average UK household throws away £470 worth of food a year whole 4 million live in food poverty.

When I first saw these figures they really shocked me but I was more shocked when I realised that I was partly to blame. The unopened yoghurt tossed away before I went on holiday, the strange alien like vegetable that arrived in my organic box that I had no idea what to do with, those chocolates that were given to me as a gift when I was cutting out sugar, the food left over when I over catered for a party. Most of us regularly toss away edible food without a second thought.
