Edward Norton is one of the best actors of his generation with an Oscar nomination under his belt for his breakthrough role in Primal Fear, but he has always aspired to approach film making from a 360 degrees perspective not only as an actor but as a writer, scriptwriting, director and as a producer.

And in Motherless Brooklyn, a period film set in a highly corrupted new York in the fifties – first presented at the Toronto Film Festival last year – he embodies all that as he has been the main actor, the scriptwriter and also the director.

Film Review: While We’re Young

Fans of indie films will probably recognise the name Noah Baumbach, the writer/director of slices of pure pleasure like The Squid And The Whale (2005) and, more recently, Frances Ha (2012).  Now he’s taken a leaf out of fellow director Wes Anderson’s book (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom) and made the leap from indie cinema to the mainstream.

His first film for the mass market, While We’re Young, certificate 15, opens all over London and the UK on Friday.  But has the move worked?  And is it that rarity nowadays – a genuinely funny comedy?  London Mums’ film critic, Freda Cooper, gets her chuckle muscles ready …..

Awards: BAFTA predictions

The stars will be out in force this Sunday for the British film industry’s big night out.  The BAFTA film awards is often seen as a predictor for the Oscars and, as the American Academy members still have over ten days to make their choices, they may have some influence.

But first things first.  Who’s going to carry off those gold masks?  London Mums’ resident film critic, Freda Cooper, dusts off her crystal ball to make her BAFTA predictions for the top trophies.
