It may not be official, but this March seems like Sequels Month. The latest from Batman and Superman arrives just before Easter, as does My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3 is out at the end of this week. It’s getting crowded. First out of the blocks, however, is the latest in the post-dystopian series, Divergent:Allegiant.
It’s the third in the franchise and arrives in cinemas this Thursday, 10 March 2016. London Mums’ resident film critic, Freda Cooper, tries to find some signs of life.

All three of the big YA franchises feature in cinemas this year. We’ve already had the second of the Divergent films, The Insurgent, and The Hunger Games reaches its climax in November with Mockingjay Part II. Sandwiched in between comes Maze Runner – The Scorch Trials, which is out now, certificate 12A. London Mums’ resident film critic, Freda Cooper, puts on her running shoes to catch up.

The second half of this year has seen the arrival of a new genre at the cinema. The Y A movie. Translated, this means films aimed at Young Adults, and they’ve all been based on successful books written for the same audience. The Fault In Our Stars, Divergent, If I Stay and, most recently, The Giver, are the most recent and some of them have been big hits at the box office, The Fault In Our Stars especially.
The latest one, The Maze Runner, arrives this Friday. Having already made it to the top of the American box office, it looks like doing well over here – and plans for part two of the trilogy have already been well-publicised. So is it just a prequel or does it bring something new to the Y A party?
