The VE Day celebrations may have taken place over the weekend, but they start all over again on Friday – on the big screen this time – with the release of A Royal Night Out, certificate 12A.
There’s plenty of archive material of the celebrations on 8 May 1945, one of the most famous being the photograph of the Royal Family on the Buckingham Palace balcony: King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret and guest of honour, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, all waving to the enthusiastic crowds down below.

Do you know the movie Sleepers? It’s one of my favourite ones.
At the beginning of the story the narrator says: “This is a true story about friendship that runs deeper than blood.”
I use this sentence as a spark to speak about one of the most enduring friendships, between two shining stars in the Fifties, Audrey Hepburn in cinema, and Hubert De Givenchy in fashion. They met by chance and remained friends for the rest of their lives.
Audrey Hepburn made a stunning debut in William Wyler’s smash hit Roman Holiday hitting the screen like a bomb. Some said: “This slim little person with the winged eyebrows and Nefertiti head and throat is the world’s darling”, just to give you an idea of what Audrey has been since her very first steps in Hollywood. She was the real Hollywood’s sweetheart; on the other hand, Hubert de Givenchy was a young stylist preparing his very own first collections and was declared a real enfant-prodige in the French Fashion industry.

I’m Paola, and I’m a new London Mums’ contributor based in Italy.
A day in Rome with Audrey Hepburn is a book written by a friend of mine, Maurizio Canforini, a young Italian writer and theatre actor who, some months ago, decided to give me custody to the Facebook page related to his book. I invite you London Mums to join and like the page which re-visits lots of old facts and photos of Audrey Hepburn throughout her fruitful career in films and fashion.
