You wait years for a film about a woman who couldn’t sing in tune and then, just like London buses, two come along almost simultaneously. French offering, Marguerite, opened around six weeks ago and was based on the story of Florence Foster Jenkins. Now the movie bearing her name arrives in cinemas this Friday, 8 May, certificate 12A.

For Americans, Louis Zamperini was a hero for many reasons. An athlete at the Berlin Olympics, he went on to serve in the air force during World War II, was shot down over the Pacific, survived in an open life raft only to be captured by the Japanese and subjected to a brutal regime in a POW camp. Yet he endured it all, returning to Japan in his later years on a mission of forgiveness and reconciliation.
He’s not so well known in this country – until now, that is, with the release of Angelina Jolie’s second film as a director, Unbroken.
