The arrival on the big screen of a much-loved TV series often provokes mixed reactions. Concern that it won’t match up to the original. Or, if it’s got a great cast and the trailer looks promising, excitement at the prospect.
The latest cinema version of classic comedy Dad’s Army opens in cinemas this Friday, 5 February 2016. And it certainly has a great cast. But is it a fitting tribute to one of television’s favourite comedies? London Mums’ resident film critic, Freda Cooper, tries not to panic …….

London seems to be the current location of choice for film makers. First there was Get Santa, then Paddington arrived and brought his special tour with him. Both British movies, they were great for the domestic audience, but now it’s the turn of something more international, taking icons like Big Ben and the London Eye all around the world. It’s the third in the Night At The Museum series, Secret Of The Tomb, certificate PG.

Noticed Paddington Bears springing up around London over the past few weeks? Over fifty of them are there until the end of December and for a reason. Firstly, they’re a fund raiser for the NSPCC and, in their various guises – a coat decorated with oranges and a space suit are just two – they also herald the cinematic arrival of the nation’s favourite bear from Darkest Peru. Paddington.
Future Films Heads Up: Hugh Bonneville’s Paddington

The first sighting of Paddington was back in June – the big screen version of a certain Peruvian bear, that is. Then there was all the kerfuffle surrounding the loss of his Colin Firth voice and its replacement by a Ben Whishaw one. So, with the release date of 28 November creeping ever closer, a select group of film writers – me included! – was summonsed to a screening room in Soho for a preview screening of footage from the film.
That, in itself, was enough to get me there, but at the eleventh hour it was announced that we’d be in the presence of the aristocracy. OK, fictional aristocracy, because Hugh Bonneville, who plays Mr Brown in the film, was taking time off from Downton to host the whole shebang. And a very nice tan he was sporting as well!
