With the Oscars just a month away, one of the biggest contenders for the Best Picture accolade arrives in British cinemas. Spotlight is based on the true story of a group of investigative journalists in Boston who revealed crimes against children in the city’s Catholic Church – and discovered an even bigger cover-up.

DVD Review: Infinitely Polar Bear

In the same week that the independent movie industry gathers for this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Utah, a refugee from the 2014 festival arrives on DVD in the UK. A film that was also shown at the Toronto Film Festival in the same year, was released in the US last year and even earned its star a Golden Globe nomination this year. Yet it never saw the light of day in British cinemas.

London Mums’ resident film critic, Freda Cooper, checks out Infinitely Polar Bear, which arrives on DVD this week, certificate 15. And finds that the phrase “straight to DVD” doesn’t necessarily mean a bad film.

2016 Film Preview

For film fans, January and February are the best time of the year. And the worst. The awards season means that there’s a glut of good films released over those two months to make sure they’re in contention. And it also means trying to squeeze in as many cinema visits as possible over just a couple of months.

Except that 2016 might be slightly different. Some of the titles tipped as contenders were released months ago: Inside Out in July and Carol more recently in November. Which means that the start of the year could be a little less fraught than usual. As for the films themselves, London Mums’ resident film critic, Freda Cooper, takes a look ahead and picks the must-sees.

Film Review: Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Blockbusters will rule at the cinema this summer.  I’ll be previewing them for London Mums in a few weeks’ time but, in the meantime, warm up acts don’t come much bigger than this – Avengers: Age Of Ultron.  It opens this Thursday, 23 April 2015, certificate 12A.

After being at the helm for both this and the first film in the Marvel series, Avengers Assemble (2012), director and writer Joss Whedon has announced he’s stepping away from the franchise.  The next two instalments – Avengers:Infinity War, parts 1 and 2, due in 2018 and 2019, will be in the hands of Anthony and Joe Russo, who also directed Captain America:The Winter Soldier (2014). Having built his reputation on the Avengers, is Whedon going out with a bang?  London Mums’ film critic, Freda Cooper, straps herself in ……..
