Iron Man, Thor, Captain America …… they’ve all become familiar faces in cinemas over the past couple of years, as the Marvel universe rolls out blockbuster after blockbuster. But super heroes don’t come in just a variety of shapes: they come in different sizes as well, as the latest one shows.
Ant-Man, easily the most diminutive super hero of them all, arrives in cinemas this Friday, 17th, certificate 12A. Disney’s first animation of 2015 arrives in the UK this week with something of a fanfare. With Oscar and BAFTA nominations under its belt, as well as box office success in the States, Big Hero 6 (certificate PG) comes complete with an unlikely, super-size hero – and Feast, a short companion piece that’ll bring a lump to your throat.

It’s a fine old tradition among us film critics that at the end of the year we look back at the films from the past twelve months and pick our favourites. Not be left out, that’s exactly what I’m going to do now, but with a slight twist. I’m only choosing from the films I’ve reviewed here on London Mums during 2014.
Rather than give you a long list of ten, I’ve narrowed the best of the year down to five. And a diverse lot they are too.

This year’s summer blockbuster season at the cinema is well into its stride – week four, in fact. Transformers: Age Of Extinction, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and Hercules have all had their turn. But now come the unlikeliest bunch of heroes of the lot – a thief, two thugs, a murderer and a maniac – and they all have the fate of 12 billion people in their hands. They’re the Guardians Of The Galaxy.
