It’s tradition. Turkey, pudding – and a look back at the best films of the year. And who am I to do otherwise?

For my top five this year, I’ve set two rules. I’m only choosing from films that have been released in UK cinemas during 2015 (so, for instance, the ones I saw at the London Film Festival but which haven’t been given a general distribution aren’t in contention) and I’m only including movies which I’ve reviewed for London Mums.

Disney’s Cinderella and “that dress”

2015’s shaping up to be a big year for Disney.   It started with box office and Oscar success for Big Hero 6 and Feast.  Now the attention turns to live action, with the arrival of Cinderella this coming Friday, 27 March.  But it’s not the film alone that’s been attracting attention.  When its director, Kenneth Branagh, and star Lily James were in town last week for its press conference, the question on everybody’s lips was about Cinderella’s ball gown – and her tiny waist.  London Mums’ film critic, Freda Cooper was there to hear what they had to say.

Film review: Big Hero 6 and Feast

Disney’s first animation of 2015 arrives in the UK this week with something of a fanfare.  With Oscar and BAFTA nominations under its belt, as well as box office success in the States, Big Hero 6 (certificate PG) comes complete with an unlikely, super-size hero – and Feast, a short companion piece that’ll bring a lump to your throat.

Movie Preview: What To See In Early 2015

The first few months of the year are a mixture of heaven and hell for film fans.  Heaven because all the big award contenders are released, which means plenty of good films, and hell because there’s so many, so you inevitably end up missing something.  But let’s be positive about it!   The films likely to be in the running for this year’s BAFTAs and Oscars (we won’t know for sure who they are until mid-January) will give adults plenty to get their teeth into – and there’s at least one family movie that could be up for a gong or two as well.
