Before Suffragette officially opened the London Film Festival on Wednesday night – and demonstrators invaded the red carpet in a move that would probably have had the original suffragettes cheering – London Mums’ film critic, Freda Cooper, raced across town from the official media screening to the film’s press conference. All to be in the presence of a screen legend.

Owen Wilson’s in the hot seat for The Big Interview on this week’s Talking Pictures, from London Mums’ very own film critic, Freda Cooper. And his action hero credentials in new release No Escape are under scrutiny as well. Also in cinemas is the Brazilian comedy/drama, The Second Mother, and one of the up-coming trio of films about the notorious Kray twins, The Krays:Kill Order.
Film Review: Far From The Madding Crowd

It takes a brave director to make a film based on a much-loved novel – and an even braver one when the original movie adaptation is still something of a favourite.
The director in question is Thomas Vinterberg and the film is Far From The Madding Crowd, released around the UK this Friday, certificate 12A. It’s based on the Thomas Hardy classic, a regular GCSE and O Level text, and the original film version came out in 1967. With a cast like Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Peter Finch and Terence Stamp, it was a hit at the time and was generally regarded as a faithful adaptation – enough for it to be shown to teenage students, anyway!
So has Vinterberg been brave or just downright reckless? London Mums’ film critic Freda Cooper squeezes herself into a 19th century corset in search of the answer ……
