After the riotous comedy of Absolutely Fabulous:The Movie last week, this time it’s the turn of something more sophisticated and definitely more American. Maggie’s Plan is released this Friday, certificate 15, and comes from director/writer Rebecca Miller, who is married to Daniel Day Lewis, as well as being the daughter of legendary playwright Arthur Miller.

One of the most instantly recognisable icons in cinema, Marilyn Monroe, is currently the subject of special season at the BFI on Southbank. Running until the end of the month, the line-up includes comedies such as Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Her more serious work is represented by what turned out to be her last completed film, The Misfits (1961), which is also re-released in major cities around the UK, certificate PG. It was a film that had more than its fair share of difficulties while it was being made. London Mums’ film critic, Freda Cooper, separates the movie from the myths.
