What’s your favourite PRODUCT OF THE YEAR 2013?

As a ‘regular’ guest at the Product of the Year Awards for the past few years, I must admit I have been enjoying the whole Product of the Year process from the initial selection of the products to the awards’ ceremony where the final consumer votes are announced. The awards ceremony this year, presented by comedian and Outnumbered star Hugh Dennis (who has a background in advertising in his previous life) was held at stunning One Marylebone in London’s West End, and was attended by some of the biggest manufacturers in the business, including Reckitt Benckiser, Procter & Gamble, Mars, GlaxoSmithKline and Unilever.

2013 POTY b

Products offering convenience for busy Brits have topped the list for the 2013 Product of the Year survey. More than 10,000 consumers voted to determine the winners of the annual awards, advising fellow shoppers on the most innovative products on the shelves.

The results reveal that despite the downturn, consumers are still willing to pay more for clever product innovations which offer multi-functions or added convenience for time-saving. McCain Ready Baked Jackets, winner of the food category, proved popular for providing a crispy-skinned jacket after cooking in the microwave for just five minutes.

As the economic downturn continues, brands are looking to product innovations which bring the ‘going out’ experience to consumers’ homes. New brand Rocktails won gold with its readymade frozen cocktails which can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere and the Philips Zoom NiteWhite scored highly, enabling consumers to enjoy the convenience of whitening their teeth while they sleep.

2013 POTY Hugh Dennis

Twists on the nation’s favourite brands again won consumers’ votes. Weetabix Golden Syrup, which is packed with all the nutritional benefits of the original, won the cereal category for delivering on taste with nearly half the sugar of the average sweetened cereal. In beauty, the Nivea Q10 Firming Body Oil was popular for both pampering and firming skin at the same time.

Consumers have also welcomed brand new products to the shops, with the new Oral-B Trizone power brush launching, designed to have the look and feel of a manual brush but it removes up to 100% more plaque than its manual equivalent. The new Vanish Powerpowder Clean & Fresh was also rewarded, a new powder that both cleans and freshens carpets when sprinkled onto.

TNS, once again conducted the research, offering an industry sector understanding and collating the survey from more than 10,000 people in the UK and Ireland.

You can check below the list of the products which were voted by consumers and let us know which one is your favourite and whether you agree with them. But before doing that, enjoy Hugh Dennis jokes of the night as well as an amazing performance of Gabrielle Aplin, who in my view is going to be the closest competition for British super pop star Adele.
