Whether you are heading to the beach or to the mountain, or you are staying in London with the kids, you will need these Summer essentials. My list have includes flip flops and travel pouches, a strong (and stable) backpack for children (and/or parents) and a sleeping bag for my very first festival experience. Take a look for hopefully some inspiration.
Flip-flops and personalised travel pouches by Havaianas
Personally I cannot wear any shoes other than flip flops during the Summer. It might not be the healthiest shoe choice in the world, but I find them so comfortable and fresh.
This year I tried two different pairs of Havaianas which are absolutely amazing. Created in 1962 Havaianas have been bringing Brazilian spirit all around the world through the legendary rubber sole and bright joyful designs.
Their colourful look is one cool factor certainly. But I also find them very comfortable and practical. This year Havaianas have also manufactured elegant flip flops with gems that are only available from Selfridges and Harrods.
A real treat for glamma mammas.
Kids will be spoilt for choice this Summer with so many prints to choose from including some with Disney characters and super heroes.
If you have a baby who is starting crawling up and going for her first steps you may want to look at the super cute selection for babies.
Also from this Summer Havaianas have created a sunglasses range to die for.
I would love every single pair. Maybe I’ll get a pair in the sales next year.
The personalised travel pouches are new too.
I got my very own little bag with cute pins representing some of my favourite things in life, i.e.films, music and of course Brasil!
The same pins can be purchased to personalised the flip flops and walk around with very original Summer shoes.
Beach, here I come!
My first choice of backpack for my 11 year old son this Summer is the official Minecraft Diamond backpack. It’s not because Diego loves Minecraft but also because this bag is seriously robust and I am considering it long term, not just for the school holidays but for term time usage too. At £24.99 it’s excellent value considering all the features it has.
Travel Pouch for mums
Mums deserve little treats sometimes. This travel pouch by Laura Felicity Design is the ideal accessory for keeping all my essential make up and brushes together. It doesn’t have to stop at cosmetics either. I have used it also to store my sunglasses, phone, travel essentials and keys. But on a short trip abroad I have also used it to store my passport and travel documents. It’s quite eye-catching for the vibrant colours of its design. It is versatile, chic and almost as big as the A5 London Mums magazine – 26cm (w) x 22cm (h). When it arrived, this lovely travel pouch had a lovely natural flower scent that permeated my whole handbag. So lovely. Laura Felicity Design designs bespoke screen printed decor for homes which include products too such as the lovely travel pouches which are perfect for busy mummies. This pouch retails at £19.
Sleeping bags for camping outdoor and … indoor
When my son was a baby could only sleep in sleeping bags because he moved too much over night and without these sacks he would have slept without a blanket all night.
As he grew up I bought him bigger and bigger sacks until he was too wriggly and did not fit in the bags any longer. Then sleeping bags with feet came along and he started walking in them. I always wanted to try and sleep in one of those wonderful sacks… Call me crazy but now even parents can wear them. I have found them in big sizes. These are not just perfect for the Summer while camping but will be great also as normal pyjamas. The genius behind this new product is one of the first London Mums in my network, Karina Grassy of Slumbersac. Read her inspirational story here.
Once you have used the sleeping bags at festival you can use them at home in Winter nights as onesies. I love the quality of these bags.
Tablet for entertainment
To avoid overloading luggage this Summer, instead of carrying lots of books I will bring the latest Kindle tablet by Amazon called Amazon Fire for Kids loaded with lots of ebooks and programmes (many of them educational) to entertain and educate my child while travelling. Amazon recently introduced this new budget tablet for kids, which has a important feature for parents to keep an eye on what kids do with the device and for how long they are allowed to use it as well as to interact with them and trigger conversations on the books they read.
The new Amazon Fire for Kids comes with electronic Discussion Cards that let parents share in their kids’ digital experience through short summaries of the books, videos, educational apps and games their kids are using.
Discussion Cards are found within the new Parent Dashboard, a mobile optimised website that also provides daily activity reports to help parents review the digital content their kids are using in Fire for Kids and determine how to manage time limits and educational goals.
Beach fun games
Bunch O Balloons are essentials to get some good old school fun on the beach started. We loved them last year when we first saw them and could not stop buying more to play while on the seaside. They are most definitely a summer essential if you are heading to the beach or to a park on a hot Summer day.
The brightly coloured “Fill and tie 100 water balloons in 60 seconds” are good value for money. There’s nothing that screams Summer louder than water balloon fights, dancing & having fun with your friends!
Sun cream and skincare for sensitive skin
Summer is hopefully on its way again and when the sun comes out so does our skin! Sudden changes in climate can wreak havoc on our skin and it’s important to protect it from harmful rays now more than ever before. With this in mind, London Mums have been looking for sun scream products for sensitive skin and found some of the best include new sun care range SunSafe SPF50 for summer 2017 by leading mineral skincare experts Dead Sea Spa Magik, exclusively sold in health retail giant Holland & Barrett.
Dead Sea Spa Magik range seem perfect for all members of the family and provide all round protection from UVA & UVB rays, and all are light-weight easily absorbed formulas that are waterproof for up to eight hours. The entire range is “free from” common allergens and even suitable for those following a gluten and dairy free lifestyle, as well as vegetarians and vegans.
What I like the most about this range is its high absorbency and delicate natural scent. All products tested are made with unique blends of marine minerals and plant extracts which are gentle on the skin. I also like the fact that all creams are waterproof for up to eight hours, as well as deeply hydrating. It is also invisible and does not leave those nasty white marks that I hate especially when on the beach. Dead Sea Spa Magik’s new SunSafe range for SS17 is currently exclusive to Holland & Barrett stores and www.hollandandbarrett.com only.
There are many other sun care products on the market, but here are London Mums’ favourite ones in all price ranges. They are all good quality.
The NEW AVEENO® Baby range includes natural oatmeal to help nourish and protect babies’ sensitive skin – leaving it feeling comfortable, healthy and protected. It works for mums and dads’ skin too actually. In fact I love it as I am sensitive to many creams but this one is perfect for my skin too. I suppose the reason this cream works well on delicate skin is that it uses natural ingredients that work to gently nourish and protect their skin. Oats are a key ingredient to look out for – providing gentle relief to dry and sensitive prone skin, as confirmed by Dr Shefali Rajpopat, Consultant Dermatologist.
NEW AVEENO® Baby Daily Care range includes
AVEENO® Baby Daily Care Baby Moisturising Lotion (£5.99) provides moisture for 24 hours and has a lovely smell (even for the parents).
AVEENO® Baby Daily Care Baby Barrier Cream (£5.99) helps to soothe and reduce redness, protecting skin from the causes of nappy rash (it feels like a luxury nappy cream to the touch).
AVEENO® Baby Daily Care Baby Gentle Wash (£5.99) is a soap-free formula, developed for new-born skin. Mums will enjoy using it too.
If you are already at the airport and forgot suncare, Boots sell a few great products on their own waterproof suncream range. Boots UK sun care expert Clare O’Connor shares her top tips: “Apply children’s sun lotion generously from head to toe 15 minutes before going outside, and don’t forget the tops of feet, ears and eyelids. Fun sun suits are a good idea to keep children protected, like a wetsuit they cover the body, arms and legs and have a UV 50 protection factor. Apply sun cream under the suit and when you reapply you only need to focus on the exposed skin. Avoid going out in the sun between 11am and 3pm, and be sure to keep babies under six months out of direct sunlight.”

Sunshine makes the skin even more sensitive than usual particularly baby skin which is not used to it. London Mums have tested baby friendly skincare products that are suitable for both babies and the rest of the family.
Johnson & Johnson has always had great value skincare range and now have a ‘Supported by RCM (Royal College of Midwives)’ logo on packs for an additional guarantee of quality.
London Mums’ chosen products for this Summer include JOHNSON’S® TOP-TO-TOE® Baby Bath and JOHNSON’S® Extra Sensitive Baby Wipes which were tested in independent clinical trials carried out by midwives, and were shown to be just as safe as using water alone on newborn skin.
