Why I love Bridgerton

Now that the first part of Bridgerton 3 has landed on Netflix, I ponder why I love Bridgerton so much and eagerly await its return to our screens each year, only to feel disappointed if it gets delayed. It’s not just the emotional dramas of the Bridgertons, the sparkling ball gowns, or the pomp of Queen Charlotte’s court. There’s something uniquely captivating about this series that sets it apart from traditional period dramas.

Witty Conversations and Clever Use of Language

One of the standout features of Bridgerton is the clever conversations full of wit and the smart use of language. The dialogue is not only entertaining but also educational, highlighting the importance of words in communication. It’s a joy to watch characters spar verbally, with every exchange brimming with sharpness and intelligence. This element brings a refreshing vitality to the show, engaging viewers in a way that few series manage.

Modern Music with a Regency Twist

Bridgerton’s soundtrack is another brilliant aspect, blending contemporary pop music with classical arrangements. Hearing familiar songs like “Cheap Thrills” by the Vitamin String Quartet played as minuets or by a string orchestra adds a delightful twist. This innovative musical approach bridges the gap between the modern audience and the Regency era, making the series feel both timeless and relevant.

Elegance and Diversity

The elegance of the dresses and the Regency fashion style is a visual feast. The attention to detail in the costumes is impeccable, bringing the period to life with vibrant colours and intricate designs. Moreover, the diversity of the series stands out from traditional period dramas. Bridgerton presents a society where people of different races mingle seamlessly, challenging the usual historical narratives and offering a more inclusive portrayal of the past.

Contemporary Irony and Sarcasm

The use of irony and sarcasm, while set in Regency times, gives the series a contemporary edge. Characters often navigate their societal constraints with a knowing wink to the audience, making the series feel modern despite its historical setting. This blend of old and new creates a unique viewing experience that’s both amusing and thought-provoking.

The Allure of Lady Whistledown

Lady Whistledown’s witty and endearingly longing commentary adds another layer of charm. Her mysterious identity and sharp observations keep viewers hooked, and her intellectual prowess makes her a standout character in a world where such traits are often frowned upon, especially in women.

Historical Context and Modern Relevance

Bridgerton provides a utopian vision of society where women enjoy sexual freedom without harsh judgement and people of colour hold significant positions, contrasting sharply with the historical realities of the time. While we understand that the world of the 18th and 19th centuries was far from this inclusive, the series allows us to suspend our disbelief and revel in this idealised version of history.

Regency Romance

I’ve been captivated by the Regency genre ever since my teenage years when I first discovered “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, a timeless classic about love, social standing, and personal growth. “Sense and Sensibility” also intrigued me with its exploration of the contrasting personalities and romantic adventures of the Dashwood sisters.

However, it was Shonda Rhimes’s take on Bridgerton that prompted me to delve deeper into the history of people of colour in England during the Regency era. Learning about the mixed-race children of East India Company earls and their Indian wives, as well as the nannies from the Caribbean and lascars from the subcontinent, has enriched my appreciation of the period.

Bridgerton’s Impact on Historical Fiction

Bridgerton and its spin-off, Queen Charlotte, have opened the door for other authors to explore real histories without glossing over colonialism and slavery. Shonda Rhimes’ stories, blending historical accuracy with romance and humour, bring a new depth to the genre.

Now it’s time to get our feathers ready because Bridgerton season three is upon us. Fingers crossed for our beloved Penelope Featherington!

Bridgerton Love Letter Game

For Bridgerton enthusiasts like myself, summer just got a whole lot more exciting with the Bridgerton Love Letter Game. This portable card game promises endless fun as players delve into the world of the Bridgerton series, embarking on thrilling investigations to uncover the elusive identity of Lady Whistledown.

What makes Bridgerton Love Letter particularly delightful is its faithful retention of the simple yet enjoyable mechanics of the original game, coupled with an enticing twist. In this version, players are treated to the inclusion of Queen Charlotte as a special character, boasting a unique power not found in the classic game.

Whether you’re lounging at home or on the move, Bridgerton Love Letter is the perfect companion for any fan looking to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Regency-era London.
