Film review: The Garfield Movie starring Chris Pratt

On Sunday 12th May 2024, London Mums Magazine was invited to the screening of the new animation, The Garfield Movie. Garfield, an orange fictitious tabby cat is bought to life in this new animation movie. This comic strip cat is over 40 years old and I can remember watching Garfield in my childhood, so to see this movie after many years is very nostalgic. The Garfield Movie hits UK cinemas on 24 May 2024.

The story

Based on the popular comic strip, this live-action comedy follows the exploits of Garfield (Bill Murray), the large, lazy and wisecracking cat owned by hapless Jon Arbuckle (Breckin Meyer). Jon’s other housemate, Odie, is a dim but sweet dog who frequently annoys Garfield. When the conniving orange feline gets fed up with Odie, he devises a way to get rid of the pooch. However, after Garfield has a change of heart about Odie, he must find a way to get his fellow pet back.

The verdict

Chris Pratt voices Garfield in this movie and is great, he has one of the best parts of the film. His character is funny and charismatic, and his voice over suits the role. The supporting – cast was also pretty fun, Samuel L was great and has great chemistry with Chris (Garfield). Also really liked Hannah Waddingham, who plays Jinx, the villainous Persian Cat.

Ving Rhames was also great, he played the role of Otto the bull, i always like a movie more when he’s in it. I don’t know if it was a coincidence but they actually played the mission impossible-theme during a scene with Ving. As far as the animation goes, it was nothing special.

Overall Garfield had a sweet ending with a positive message about family and forgiveness which was nice to see. I would definitely recommend this movie for younger children.
