The story

If you’re looking for the perfect family movie that delights both kids and adults, look no further than Despicable Me 4, out in cinemas this July. This latest instalment in the beloved franchise is nothing short of a triumph, combining comedy, action, and heartfelt moments in a way that truly captivates audiences of all ages.

From the very start, it’s clear that Despicable Me 4 is something special. The film reintroduces us to Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), his ever-expanding family, and of course, those lovable Minions. This time around, Gru and his wife, Lucy (Kristen Wiig), have a newborn son, Gru Jr. The dynamics of Gru trying to bond with his son provide a fresh and touching storyline that adds depth to his character.

The plot thickens with the introduction of Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell), a former classmate of Gru who has broken out of prison and is set on revenge. Maxime’s villainy is so compelling that you’ll find yourself hating him – a sure sign of a well-crafted antagonist. The tension escalates when Maxime kidnaps Gru Jr. and turns him into a bug, prompting Gru to embark on a high-stakes rescue mission.

The film is packed with action scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat, but it’s the humour that truly shines. The Minions, as always, steal the show with their antics, and in a twist, the five main Minions gain superpowers, leading to some of the most hilarious and inventive sequences in the film. Their misadventures and slapstick comedy had everyone in the cinema, especially the adults, laughing out loud – often louder than their children!

The verdict

Despicable Me 4 - The ultimate family film of 2024 Monica with minionsOne of the film’s strengths is its ability to balance the introduction of new characters with the charm of the original cast. While some may find the plethora of new faces a bit overwhelming, the core essence of what makes Despicable Me so endearing remains intact. The locations are vibrant and imaginative, the characters are lovable, and the storyline is engaging from start to finish.

However, a minor critique would be the film’s runtime – it’s so enjoyable that you’ll wish it lasted longer. Despite this, Despicable Me 4 does a fantastic job of keeping the audience entertained without dragging on.

A standout moment for me was the climactic battle where the Minions, with their newfound powers, team up to save the day. The animation is top-notch, and the soundtrack perfectly complements the high-energy scenes. Gru’s emotional journey, coupled with the hilarious escapades of his Minions, makes this film a must-watch.

The film’s ability to resonate with both young and old viewers is perhaps its greatest achievement. It’s a rare gem that brings families together, creating a shared experience that’s both nostalgic and fresh. My friend Francesca and I found ourselves thoroughly entertained throughout, and the feedback from other families in the theatre echoed our sentiments.
