30% off instore on the 30th of the month to celebrate FARA’s 30th Anniversary

As a Mum to two young children, I was really excited to hear about the 30-30-30 offer that FARA charity shops are running at the moment. To celebrate 30 years since the first shop opened, on the 30th of every month, London Mums readers can get 30% off everything in store! You just need to show a copy of this blog, so screenshot it now!

How FARA started

For those that aren’t familiar with FARA, the charity itself was founded over 30 years ago by Jane Nicholson MBE, who at the time was chair of the Sue Ryder foundation, and a trained nurse. You might remember seeing on TV the appalling images of Romanian orphans, starving and abused in state-run institutions. On seeing this, Jane felt compelled to help in any way she was able, and a few months later flew out to Romania with some volunteers. Some 30 years later and over with 10,000 beneficiaries helped, FARA is still going strong. This is mainly due to the network of charity shops that Nicholson started in London.

FARA Shops

The first store opened on Fulham Road in August 1992, and the enterprise has now evolved into 40 high street locations, serving 26 London communities. You can see a list of all FARA shops here.

Selling preloved fashion, toys, books and art, FARA has spearheaded the new breed of 2nd hand shops which are beautifully merchandised, stylish and directional. FARA carefully curate public donations of quality second-hand goods into boutique retail environments.

Within the 40 stores, FARA operates 14 dedicated Kid’s shops, specialising in high quality clothing, nursery equipment, toys and books, all kindly donated by the public. FARA also operates two specialist book shops and, as of 2017, multiple E-commerce outlets including FARA Online and eBay for a wide spectrum of goods, FARA Fine Art and an Amazon store for books.

Retromania

In 2003 FARA opened a specialist vintage store – Retromania – stocked with a vast expanse of highly collectible designer and high-end vintage clothing, accessories and memorabilia. With everything from the turn of the century through to iconic 90’s looks, Retromania is a hugely popular destination for stylists and costume designers. Capitalising on the trend for reselling online, Retromania also sells on fashion marketplace app, Depop.

As a Mum, FARA has been a god-send, especially at the moment with the cost of living going up. I’ve been able to pick up second-hand books and toys that look brand new, bought clothes and shoes for a fraction of their retail value. I have even found things for the house, some much needed essential items, as well as a few decorative impluse buys! Honestly, going to a FARA shop you just never know what you’re going to find. But you can be sure it will be in amazing condition and really well priced. And you know you are helping children in Romania who really deserve better in life.
