Lana Del Rey at BST Hyde Park 2023: A divaesque disappointment

The final gig of the BST Hyde Park festival was met with favourable weather, setting the stage for what should have been an unforgettable experience. As I attended the event with Lilly, a 12-year-old devoted Lana Del Rey fan, I couldn’t help but ponder the appeal of the 38-year-old singer’s music for such a young audience. Lana’s melancholic songs touch on themes of death, anxiety, fear, and sex, making her music a departure from the typical joyful tunes expected at a summer festival. However, despite the anticipation and excitement, Lana’s performance failed to live up to expectations, leaving much to be desired.

Bruce Springsteen’s gig at BST Hyde Park on 8 July 2023 was an unforgettable experience despite the intermittent rain. As the crowd sang and danced along with the legendary musician, it became apparent why he is called “The Boss.” Not only is he a charismatic performer, but he also demonstrates a genuine generosity towards his adoring fans. Throughout the concert, he walked into the crowds and gave away numerous branded guitar picks, a testament to his connection with the audience.

In a momentous event that took place last night – 3 July 2023, the ‘Ziggy Stardust: The Global Premiere’ graced the stage at Hammersmith Apollo, marking the 50th anniversary of a concert that changed perceptions and inspired a generation. As I sat amongst the crowd in the circle area, London Mums magazine reporter Laura had the privilege of conversing with a fellow concertgoer who had attended the famous 1973 gig, where David Bowie bid farewell to his iconic Ziggy Stardust persona. It was clear that Bowie’s impact extended beyond his music, challenging societal norms and embracing otherness in a time of prejudice.
