The story starts in the year 2059. Unchecked global warming means half of Britain is under water. Everyone has to sit an exam when they hit 15. Pass and you get to stay in The Territory, fail and you’re shipped off to the malaria-ridden Wetlands for a life of misery if not certain death. Rich families can pay for a procedure for their kids allowing them to upload information from a computer directly into their brains through a Node in the back of their necks, making passing virtually guaranteed.
We follow Noa, a ‘Norm’ and her best friends as their lives are beset by power-tripping teachers, vindictive ‘Childes’, and a police force that clubs down Opposition members in the street. Noa needs to focus. Focus as her life depends on it. But this is easier said than done when a mysterious boy with mismatched eyes shows up at her school…
Hailed by The Guardian children’s booksite as ‘the 1984 of our time’, The Territory is a recommended BookTrust read and the winner of this year’s Trinity Schools Book Award. It’s a perfect series for 11-14 year olds, in which Govett explores thought-provoking topics like global warming, educational inequality and fake news.
