Book of the week: How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran

Jun 07 2021

Quick Reads, the life-changing scheme tackling the UK’s shocking adult literary crisis, are the way forward to encourage people to read. I love the short books in the 2021 series including best-selling London authors Caitlin Moran, Louise Candlish and Khurrum Rahman among others.

Sunday Times best-seller and British Book Award winner Louise Candlish is renowned for her dark domestic thrillers and has written a powerful short story for this year’s Quick Reads collection – The Skylight. Londoner Louise is part of this year’s campaign because she has experienced first-hand the transformative power of books – she credits reading for setting her on the right path when she was ‘young and adrift’ and discovered books at a free public library – ‘it means such a lot to me to be a part of literacy campaign that really does change lives.’

Picture book of the week: Up in the air by Zoe Armstrong and Sara Ugolotti

Jun 03 2021

Today DK brings out a lovely Summer picture book written by Zoe Armstrong and illustrated by Sara Ugolotti, Up In The Air. This wonderful children’s illustrated book celebrates the nature around and above us, encouraging children to look, listen, and take notice with a mix of drawings and nature photos. It could be defined as a biology compendium for very young children. Useful for primary school pupils to digest information in a very fun way.

Book of the week: The Pebble Spotter’s Guide by Clive Mitchell

May 20 2021

There’s nothing quite like searching the rocks on a beach until that special one catches your eye – a perfect shape, a gorgeous colour, an intriguing pattern. I have been a fan of pebble spotting since I was a little girl. I still have a few meaningful pebbles collected from beautiful beaches over the years, the heart-shaped ones being my favourite ones. As the UK slowly eases out of lockdown and parents begin to plan their family holidays for the summer, Clive Mitchell’s new guide on pebble spotting is the perfect introduction (for them and their children) to everything they didn’t know there was to know about the mindful pleasure of pebble spotting.
