The Top British activities to celebrate this Jubilee Weekend

There’s nothing like a Jubilee celebration to invoke a sense of pride – especially when that celebration comes with a two-day bank holiday! But with two days off, the pressure is on to make sure you make the most of it. Thankfully, we’ve got all the best ideas for you to make the most of long weekend and celebrate in style.

What is the Platinum Jubilee?

The Platinum Jubilee is the first of its kind to be celebrated. The Platinum Jubilee marks the 70th year of Elizabeth II’s reign – a milestone that no other monarch has reached before. The anniversary of the Queen’s coronation was actually on the 6th of February this year, but celebrations were delayed until the warmer weather and for the bank holiday weekend.

This truly historical landmark will be celebrated over the four-day weekend and there’s a lot going on. To kick off the celebrations, Thursday 2nd June will start with the Trooping of the Colour. This military parade consists of 1400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians all marching down The Mall by Buckingham Palace to the Horse Guard’s Parade.

This display is seen annually and has been going on for 260 years. This year however, the parade is extra special due to the Platinum Jubilee. There will be the usual performances from the military bands and the Queen will carry out her routine inspection of the guards.

There will then be a fly-past by the Royal Air Force which will be visible from the local surrounding area. This will then be followed by a 41-gun salute in Green Park nearby.

Sadly, the tickets for a seated view of the Trooping of the Colour have sold out but people can still catch the parade as it travels between Buckingham Palace and the Horse Guards Parade. There will also be screens showing the ceremony in Green Park if you don’t fancy your chances on the side lines. If you’re planning on attending, it’s best to get there early – there are always some royal enthusiasts that get there as soon as they can!

A service of Thanksgiving will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday 3rd June to celebrate the Queen. There will also be a special ringing of Great Paul – the largest bell in the country. This is a momentous occasion as it has never been rung for a royal celebration before. Unfortunately, attendance is by invitation only but the service will be broadcast on the BBC.

Fun activities for the Jubilee

If you’re not planning on celebrating in the capital with the Queen, you might be stuck for things to do. But we’ve created a list of fun British activities you can do with your loved ones to have the best Jubilee weekend ever.

Go for a picnic – there’s nothing more British than a picnic in the countryside. You don’t even have to go that far – your back garden will do nicely! Dust off your picnic blanket and pop down to M&S and raid their nibbles section. Top that off with some Pimm’s or some bubbles and you’ve got a great celebratory picnic!

Play a game of bingo – it wouldn’t be a British activity without a game of bingo! Many Brits love playing a game of bingo, and the popularity of the game has boomed since the transition online. Players can now head online to play bingo with 888ladies and other providers who all offer a range of bingo games. Why not take advantage of the online promotions this coming Jubilee weekend and enjoy a classic game of British bingo.

Host an afternoon tea – you can’t get much more British than an afternoon tea. It’s super simple to do – especially if you don’t make the cakes yourself! Rustle up some finger sandwiches, get some cakes on a plate and bring out the scones and you’re away. And you don’t have to stick to drinking tea, you can make it more exciting with some bubbles or any other cocktail that takes your fancy. Why not go the whole hog and drink your cocktails out of mugs? Decorate your afternoon tea space with some bunting and balloons and you’ve got a great Jubilee afternoon tea celebration!

The Queen and Britain are well-known for their Afternoon tea’s.

Visit the seaside – the British seaside is a great place to celebrate 70 years of our monarch. You might not be as keen if the weather doesn’t hold but there’s nothing more British than rain! But if the weather is good, you could take along a picnic or treat yourself to some fish and chips by the waterfront. You can build sandcastles, frolic in the water and eat your weight in rock.

Plan a street party – if you’re wanting to go all out this year, why not get all your neighbours together and host a street party! It’s a great way to not only celebrate the Jubilee but to bond with your neighbours and friends. Get everyone on a group email or text chain and have people bring out what they can. Tables, chairs, blankets and bunting can all be taken outside your homes to create a fun street party for all to enjoy.

We’ve all got our fingers crossed for a warm and sunny Jubilee weekend to enjoy with friends and family. And whatever you have planned, we hope you celebrate the Jubilee in typical British fashion.
