VICTORIAN STREET MAGICIANS, sideshows and travelling circus performers will be among the attractions as Kingston marks the start of the festive season with a Charles Dickens-inspired Christmas Lights Switch on.
In celebration of the Rose Theatre’s hotly-anticipated production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, this year’s celebrations will have a distinctly Victorian feel, with characters from the classic Christmas tale such as Tiny Tim and Ebenezer Scrooge wandering the streets and welcoming visitors.
One of the biggest annual switch-ons outside central London, last year’s event attracted 50,000 people to the town center.
The entertainment kicks off at 3pm and the switch on takes place promptly at 6pm followed by the opening of Kingston’s Christmas Market, where visitors will be able to enjoy a night of early Christmas gift shopping and superb festive foods. The Christmas market will be open from the 19th November -24th December.
Alongside the traditional Christmas Lights Switch On, Christmas market and performers there will be much more to see such as the Kingston Christmas Craft Fair, school choirs, face painting and Santa’s Grotto, guaranteeing something on the night to delight and entertain the whole family.
Entertainment will be plentiful, from the roguish chaps of the Fanshaw Emporium, who can read your minds and intrigue to the finest & funniest order, Acafella a 6 piece male vocal group who will delight visitors with a modern twist on traditional Christmas carols, The Caravan of Lost Souls, which includes a traveling circus complete with fire stilts, chimps, a contortionist and a circus specialist.
The magnificent Betty Balloon will also be taking part in the festivities creating characters out of balloon sculptures and telling stories that incorporate the audience with balloon head costumes and props.
