Outdoor is always great with active kids. Here are our top five city farms in London.
After the tremendous success of Shaun The Sheep: The Movie, it is no wonder that the Aardman Animations crew have returned with another action packed adventure – Shaun The Sheep: Pizza Party. The already loved characters return to our screens, along with some new faces, and we can hardly contain our excitement. In celebration of the upcoming release, we’ve compiled a list of five of the biggest and best city farms in London – proving that life in the concrete jungle need not be grey. So why not get back in to nature and enjoy some good old fashioned fun!
As well as being the most centrally located farm in London, Vauxhall City Farm has a free entry scheme. There’s an emphasis on education, with exciting interactive kids clubs running all week. You can brew your own delicious herbal tea, or learn to cook like a professional every Friday. Sound great? We think so! If there’s one attraction not to miss it’s the alpacas.
The adorable trio Tom, Ben and Jerry mill around in the gardens and enjoy scoffing a carrot… or four! There really is tons to do at Vauxhall farm, from riding the famous DJ the horse to booking your own private horse-riding lessons with BHS, ABRS and RDA instructors. Every weekend you can join the spinners in the workshop and learn how to change alpaca wool into yarn.
KENTISH TOWN CITY FARM
Kentish Town’s City Farm is a much appreciated patch of grass in this busy urban area. It’s a firm favourite for school trips and children’s parties. The volunteers help keep the farm ticking over, so donations go a long way. As with most community farms, they offer horse riding lessons in the week and every weekend they offer pony rides for young children. Other great activities include messy play and pottery!
SPITALFIELDS CITY FARM
Located in the vivacious vintage district of Spitalfields this ex railway depot turned family farmyard is a must for anyone in need of a shopping break. The farm has several stunning gardens including a wild garden, vegetable garden and a grass road. This is probably the most picturesque of all London’s farms and the green gardens provide an unmatched tranquillity. The farm is renowned for putting on fun events and has an annual goat race every year, on the same day as the Oxford Boat race! They even host free nature- themed sessions for children and campfire cooking clubs.
It’s no surprise that the biggest city farm in Europe has one of the biggest families. From rare breeds to fowl you’ll not be short of animals to see here. By jumping on the DLR you’ll arrive on this 32 acre farmyard on the Isle of Dogs in no time.
Fans of Shaun The Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas will find plenty of the farmer’s llamas here! A huge stable coupled with an even vaster flood lit arena makes for a grand day out at the races!
HACKNEY CITY FARM
Located in Hackney for over twenty years this family favourite has lots to offer those of all ages. The farm gives children and adults the chance to get up close and personal with a great range of farmyard creatures, plant vegetable plots and learn new skills. There’s a great green ethos and they ensure the best care for their family making this farm number one on our list! The farm offers an array of farmyard animals that can all be petted and cooed over including goats, sheep, chickens and some small creatures too. The farm has a strong community feel with events focusing on educating visitors on recycling, sustainability and growing plants. They have an extensive range of horse riding lessons with classes five days a week all year round.
Shaun The Sheep: Pizza Party is available on DVD and EST from 13th February 2017. Watch our for our review of this DVD soon online!
