Backed by the Mayor of London, the service is run by mums and mumpreneurs for other mums and children and is FREE for everyone to join. Mumpreneur’s testimonial: how Karina fulfilled her dreams by making babies have sweet dreams

Here is another amazing testimonial from one of our mumpreneurs, Karina Grassy, mum to Katie and owner of SLUMBERSAC Trading Company Limited.

In her own words Karina told us how she managed to fulfil her life dream.

“I wanted to set up my own business for a long time but it never seemed the right time or I didn’t have the funds. After my daughter, Katie, was born in May 2008 I started to think about being able to work flexible hours and being my own boss more.

However, when she was only 9 months I became a single mum and I had to put my plans on hold for a while. I went back to work in the city full-time working as an e-commerce operations manager for BHS. I left the house at 7 am and came back home 12 hours later leaving Katie in the care of a German au-pair and it didn’t take long for me to realise this wasn’t the way forward.

So I started setting up my business while still working for BHS full time, working long evenings and weekends. I saw a gap in the market for high quality but affordable baby sleeping bags in Germany as the average price for a baby sleeping bag was €60! I used Slumbersac baby sleeping bags for my daughter Katie and was impressed by the good value for money of this product.

I was convinced they would be a great seller in Germany and so I became the sole distributor for Slumbersac baby sleeping bags in Germany and started selling them online. My experience from working in e-commerce for BHS and nike.com before that helped me tremendously to become a successful online retailer.

My parents have a distribution company in Germany which made it easy to set up the distribution there while I lived in London. In March 2010 I took the plunge and quit my job in the city and moved to Eastbourne where cost of living was much cheaper in order to keep as much money as possible in my young company. I expanded our product line with beautiful children’s clothing from the UK, US and Canada and started our webshop www.notjustpink.de.

We grew our sales from €100,000 in the first year to €700,000 last year and when the opportunity to acquire Slumbersac came up I did not hesitate long. After many sleepless nights and making a sound business case I purchased the Slumbersac brand earlier this year. When I did my MBA in International Retailing at Stirling University 8 years ago, I never would have dreamed that I would be running an international company myself one day.

We now sell Slumbersac baby and toddler sleeping bags all over Europe with offices in Germany and the UK and our plans for growth and expansion are ambitious.

Our aim is to provide safe, high quality baby and toddler sleeping bags at affordable prices to parents throughout the UK and Europe. We constantly introduce new designs and are working on a range of complementary products. Our newest additions are our beautiful soft hooded bath robes for toddlers made from luxury terry cotton and our toddler sleeping bags for 3-6 year olds.”
